Candide created the companion Web site for Lifetime Television's new drama series Strong Medicine, whose pilot aired last night. Candide produced the Web site and will continue to provide regular episodic updates for Lifetime Online. The Web site can be found at http://www.lifetimetv.com/shows/strongmedicine
Harold Prince continues to champion Candide: in 1994 he directed the New York City Opera version (1982) at the Chicago Lyric Opera, and this spring Mr. Prince directs Candide for Livent, on Broadway. It has been more than twenty years since Candide has had a Broadway production. This will ... be the 1982 New York City Opera version, with yet more lyrics supplemented by Stephen Sondheim.
........Candide and Cacambo spend a month in the king’s palace. The king wonders why his guests seem so fond of such trivialities as yellow mud (gold) and common stones (jewels) but tells them to take all they want. After three thousand engineers construct a machine that will hoist Candide and Cacambo out of the country, the two men climb on with eighty sheep weighted down with gold, gems, and provender and ride over the mountains to a new land.
Robert Carsen, the Canadian opera director, has rewritten and rearranged this "Candide" so that audiences need not deduce any analogy between past and present: he spells it out. The operetta's score and lyrics remain largely unchanged, but the staging and new dialogue make it clear that the target of this satire is the United States, from the 1950s to this day.
