built 656 days ago
When Candide made its Broadway debut on Dec. 1, 1956 at the Martin Beck Theatre, it featured a book by Lillian Hellman. Although it garnered five 1957 Tony Award® nominations, including a nomination for Best Musical, the show's inaugural production ran on 73 performances and won no Tonys. But the new and improved version of Candide , which premiered March 10, 1974 at the Broadway Theatre and featured a new book by Hugh Wheeler, earned eight 1974 Tony nominations and won five Tonys, including the award for Best Book of a Musical. This vivacious Broadway revival ran for 740 performances and closed on Jan. 4, 1976.
Leonard Bernstein, a American composer and conductor, wrote the music to an operetta based on Voltaire's Candide.[85] It was originally conceived by playwright Lillian Hellman, as a play with incidental music. Bernstein... was so excited about this idea that he convinced Hellman to do it as a "comic operetta". Many lyricists worked on the show, including James Agee, then Dorothy Parker, John Latouche, Richard Wilbur, Leonard and Felicia Bernstein, and Hellman. Hershy Kay orchestrated all the pieces except the overture, which Bernstein did himself.[86]

PARIS: In the early 1950s, after Lillian Hellman was interrogated by the House Un-American Activities Committee, she sought revenge by persuading Leonard Bernstein to work with her on a musical adaptation of Voltaire's great satire, "Candide." To both playwright and composer, it seems, the parallels between the Holy Inquisition and the McArthyist witchhunt were self-evident.
