Candida: Candida Yeast

The yeast-like fungi of the genus Candida are an important cause of nosocomial infection, and rank fourth in bloodstream infections in the US. Candida albicans is the most common causative organism of these infections, but other Candida species, including Candida parapsilosis, are becoming increasingly prevalent. Candida parapsilosis is associated with approximately 25% of Candida infections in European hospitals, and in South America the incidence of this species increased from 12% to 25% between 1997 and 1999. It is now the second most commonly isolated Candida species from blood cultures in Europe, Canada and Latin America, and in some European hospitals even outranks Candida albicans.

The Skin Site Logo Candida or Monilia is a skin rash caused by a yeast living on normal skin of 80% of all people. In most people, the presence of this yeast on the skin is not visible. In some people, for unknown reasons, the yeast grows more actively and causes a red, itchy, scaling rash. The yeast likes warm moist areas and usually grows in the skin folds under the breast, stomach, and arm pits.

saliva test.jpg Candida is referred to as "dimorphic", which means it can exist or live in 2 different states or forms. As"yeast" it is a single cell plant life. It has a large, round, thick spore that is shaped like a chicken egg. It is asexual, which means it does not need a mate to reproduce. It reproduces by "budding" or growing buds. Do you recall seeing buds forming on the branches of trees or plants?
Candida is a yeast-like fungus that causes superficial infections of the mucus membranes, such as vaginal yeast infections. It can cause more serious, systemic infection when a person's immune system is compromised by diseases such as cancer and AIDS. Candida infection is more common following antibiotic use, which can kill off the bacteria that normally live on mucus membranes, and otherwise inhibit overgrowth by candida. Candida albicans is the candida species most likely to cause candida infection.

image of yeast cell of Candida albicans Candida albicans: is a pathogenic fungus that is a major health problem. It is present in most people but it is suppressed by competition with other organisms. Candida albicans can become a problem when the competition is reduced (e.g. after treatment with antibiotics) or when immunity drops (e.g. in HIV infection/ AIDS or when immunity is suppressed by drugs used after organ transplantation). It can grow by budding (budding yeast cell as pictured), hyphae, or pseudohyphae and it can form resistant spores (chlamydospores).

In the yeast state, Candida is a non-invasive, sugar-fermenting organism, while in fungal state it is invasive and can produce rhizoids, very long root-like structures. Rhizoids can penetrate mucosa or intestinal walls, leaving microscopic holes and allowing toxins, undigested food particles and bacteria and yeast to enter the bloodstream. This condition is known as Leaky Gut Syndrome and that is an explanation for many food and environmental allergies.
