Cancun is a coastal city in Mexico's easternmost state, Quintana Roo. It is the municipal seat of Benito Juárez municipality and a world renowned tourist resort with modern beachfront hotels surrounded by the Bahía de Mujeres (Bay of Women), the Caribbean Sea, and the Nichupte and Bojorquez lagoons. The mainland downtown commercial section (Cancún City), connected to the island by two bridges, has broad avenues lined with whitewashed shops, restaurants, and hotels.

Downtown Cancun is a pleasant zone with some great restaurants, modern shopping facilities and it's an alternative diversion to all of glitz that surrounds the tourist zone. Prices are a lot more reasonable and your wallet will certainly appreciate your visit Downtown.

[T]ry the clubs at Yaxchilan Avenue, located in downtown Cancun, where all the locals hang out. Try the live music bar Los 4 Elementos inside Hotel Xbalamque (Av. Yaxchilan 31). They play live music from 9 p.m. till the last customer leaves! The music is great and prices are significantly lower than those found in the hotel zone clubs. Some other clubs worth visiting in Yaxchilan Avenue are La Taberna, 77 Sports Bar and El Pabilo Cafe.

There are more than enough taxicabs running throughout the Hotel Zone and downtown Cancun to insure regular service. The rates are published and visible in almost all hotels, as well as at taxi stands.
