Panama Canal cruises are available as round-trip partial transits or one-way complete transits. Partial transits usually sail round-trip from Florida. Ships that cruise the Panama Canal usually go through the first set of locks, then turn around in Gatun Lake and exit the canal the way they entered. Full transits typically sail from coast to coast, beginning in Florida and ending in one of several ports on the West Coast, such as Los Angeles or San Diego (or the reverse).

Tourist boats, also known as canal-bus, in Amsterdam, the Netherlands. Canal estates are a form of subdivision popular in cities like Miami, Florida and the Gold Coast, Queensland; the Gold Coast has over 700 km of residential canals. Wetlands are difficult areas upon which to build housing estates, so dredging part of the wetland down to a navigable channel provides fill to build up another part of the wetland above the flood level for houses. Land is built up in a finger pattern that provides a suburban street layout of waterfront housing blocks. This practice is not popular with environmentalists.
The decision to expand the Canal follows a vote taken by Panamanians on October 22, 2006 in recognition of the need to enhance capacity of the Panama Canal, given its critical position in the global trade supply chain. The project highlights Panama's strategic location and Panama's intention to become the logistics and transportation hub for the Americas. The move will double the Canal's capacity, ensuring tightening of the global supply chain and goods getting to market faster, saving both time and money for producers and consumers alike.
