For many years Subaru Ironman Canada was the only Ironman triathlon in continental North America - that is no longer the case. So now with seven other Ironman Races on the North American schedule, how then does Subaru Ironman Canada remain one of the most popular races in the world? What is it that makes athletes line up the night after their race, sleep on the sidewalk so they can get a spot in next year's race?

The geography of Canada is varied and has many extremes, from high alpine areas in the west, flat grasslands in the centre, and ancient shield rocks in the east. Canada contains some of the very last untouched boreal forest in the world. The Canadian or Laurentian Shield is a vast area of ancient pre-cambrian rocks lying in an arc around Hudson Bay, covering more than one third of Canada's land area. This is a unique land of lakes, bogs, swamps, trees, and rocks. The relief is generally quite low, but extreme. It is a terrain that is very dangerous and difficult to traverse cross country, progress being blocked by rivers, lakes, bogs, steep cliffs, and muskeg.

It was decided in the mid 1960s by the Pearson Liberal Government that Canada should have a flag of its own. (For a while, the flag was known as 'Pearson's Pennant'.) From the outset of his administration Pearson had his heart set on approval by Parliament of a Canadian Flag. Up to that point Canada had used the Union Jack, and later, the Red Ensign (the flag of the British merchant marines) with a Canadian badge. Therefore, part of the reason for the move was to accommodate a changing Quebec which resented the symbol of English oppression on the national flag.

A Canadian Rugby Football Union was established in 1884, although this organisation went on to become the Canadian Football League, as rugby football in Canada evolved into Canadian football. In 1902–1903 the first Canadian team toured Britain. In 1909, Lord Earl Grey, then Governor General of Canada, donated a trophy to the CRU to be awarded for the Rugby Football Championship of Canada. This trophy became known as the Grey Cup. However the rules used in Canada were vastly different to the rules used in countries that were part of the IRB. In the years that followed, the CRU would legalise forward passing and make other changes that would make Canadian football a totally different sport.
