[Flag ofCanada] It is unlikely that the three maple leaves on the Arms of Ontario1 were intended to represent the founding people of Canada as recently suggested. However the original design by Sir Charles Young, Garter King of Arms, was changed at the request of the Canadian authorities; the three maple leaves replacing a single garb or sheaf of wheat. Conrad Swan in Canada : Symbols of Sovereignty, from which the original design is copied, gives a National Archives reference for correspondence between the Colonial Secretary and Garter on the matter.
