It’s good news for the employees of MCI’s Springfield call center – they will be reinstated behind their desks when the center opens again, albeit with new bosses. The center has been taken over by SunRocket, an Internet phone company based in Vienna, Vancouver. MCI, which has since been taken over by Verizon, had closed its contact centers in Springfield, Iowa, Texas, and South Carolina in April this year. SunRocket plans to hire the original team of 400 workers including 100 new ones. Employees will come under the payroll of SunRocket’s partner in California, Bell Industries, which has upgraded the pay scales of all employees. SunRocket has call centers in the Philippines and Canada.

Call centers are realizing the potential of homeshoring now more than ever. Frontier, an arm of the Citizens Communications Company that offers television and Internet services, is all set to consolidate its operations by routing most of its inbound calls to home-based agents. It plans to implement a work-at-home program throughout the nation by the end of 2007, retaining only two or three call centers. A new Frontier call center will ... be set up at DeLand, Florida, in August this year, and locations for the other two are being discussed.
