1. California Health Insurance -- Services
   Blue Cross of California has been serving the health care needs of Californians since 1937. Blue Cross of California, together with its branded affiliates, provides health care services to more than 6.8 million members.
2. State of California -- California Secretary
   The Secretary of State believes Californians should be on-line, not in line for government services. With customer services and user-friendliness in mind, the Business Programs Division is automating its functions, which include filing and maintaining more than 2 million records for most types of business entities operating in California.
3. Sea -- Sea Otters
   The most significant threat to sea otters is oil spills.[52] Sea otters are particularly vulnerable, as they rely on their fur to keep warm. When their fur is soaked with oil, it loses its ability to retain air, and the animal quickly dies from hypothermia.[52] The liver, kidneys, and lungs of sea otters ... become damaged after they inhale oil or ingest it when grooming.[52] The 1989 Exxon Valdez oil spill killed thousands of sea otters in Prince William Sound, and as of 2006 the lingering oil in the area continues to affect the population.[118]
4. The Lost Boys -- Movie
   ITN reported that Britney Spears is hotly tipped to star in a remake of 1988 vampire film The Lost Boys, which will begin filming next year. The original film starred Kiefer Sutherland, and depicted a gang of motorbike-riding vampires, who terrorised a small Californian town. The movie was hugely successful and would mark a credible move into film for Britney. The new film, which is being written by Joel Schumacher, director of the original, will feature an all-girl biker gang. The girls turn into vampires at dusk. It seems that the teen singer is keen to make the remake.
5. Arnold Schwarzenegger -- New York
   DAVIS, Calif. -- Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger came to UC Davis yesterday to celebrate a $1 million grant from the California Clean Energy Fund to establish the world's leading university center of excellence in energy efficiency. The new center is dedicated to speeding the transfer of new energy-saving products and services into the homes and lives of Californians.
6. California Insurance -- State
   California's State Compensation Insurance Fund has announced the filing of its Jan. 1, 2008, rating plan, making no change in the average collectible rate level. SCIF held the line on rates despite the Workers' Compensation Insurance Rating Bureau's filed recommendation for a 5.2 percent average rate increase effective January 1.
7. Lesbians -- Discrimination
   In a 1998 study that analyzed 50 years of coverage of gay and lesbian issues in Time and Newsweek, Lisa Bennett found that news media reinforce prejudice and discrimination against gays and lesbians. She observes that gays and lesbians are often linked to deviant or criminal behaviour without evidence to support such claims; and that the media often reprint offensive and homophobic comments. Bennett concludes that such practices reinforce assumptions that gays and lesbians are inherently inferior.
8. Over the Edge -- Congress
   Ron Brynaert of Raw Story says: Congressman Tom Tancredo (R-CO), a "dark horse" candidate for the 2008 Republican presidential nomination admitted in an interview that he is a "controversial figure" who is sometimes prone to saying "outrageous things." Last November, Esquire Magazine wrote, "Tancredo is Tancrazy.
9. California Travel -- U.S
   California ranks third in the United States in petroleum refining capacity and accounts for more than one-tenth of total U.S. capacity. In addition to oil from California, California’s refineries process crude oil from Alaska and foreign suppliers. The refineries are configured to produce cleaner fuels, including reformulated motor gasoline and low-sulfur diesel, to meet strict Federal and State environmental regulations.
