California Games

Based on the original Commodore 64 title, California Games is a different type of sports game for the Atari 2600. Eschewing traditional sports like baseball or football, this is one of the first games to simulate extreme sports. You can participate by yourself or against up to seven others in four different events: Foot Bag, Half-Pipe, BMX Racing and Surfing.

California Games was the original "Extreme Games" -- what today's generation might call "X-Games in the sun". Compete in events such as skateboarding, footbag, surfing, roller skating, flying disc (frisbee) and BMX. Some events are ranked by judges (Surfing), which gives you a score to help you improve your routine.

California Games had one more major advantage: multiplayer. Nintendo won a lot of praise for the Gameboy's link cable, which really was a cool concept at the time. But Epyx built the Lynx with multiplayer - up to 8 or 16, depending on how reliable EGM's Lynx article from issue #3 stands. California Games allows for up to four players, even though the box says two. The tragedy for every Lynx owner is, of course, you never knew anyone else who had one, so you could never try the multiplayer games for yourself. That's too bad, because this is a game that just screams "party game!"

In California Games you can play in six completely different events: half-pipe skateboarding, surfing, BMX bike racing, rollerblading, footbag, and flying disc. The breathtaking graphics depict not only the brilliant blue surf and sky and the glowing sand and sun, but ... the beautiful California girls in a way that puts you right in the moment. You can challenge yourself or up to eight other players as you compete to take home the winning trophy and you can see your name on the leaderboard as you set new world records. Create your own competition by competing in all the events, or just your favorites. You can also create your own identity and even choose a sponsor.

California Games 2 lets players compete in several outdoor events including snowboarding, driving, waterskiing, and bodysurfing at various locales in the Golden State. Up to eight people can compete against one another in either tournaments or single events while vying for high scores. Though the graphics are colorful and most objects are identifiable, the console's capabilities certainly aren't being pushed. Save for a few events, most of the gameplay is dull and repetitive to the max. ~ Chris Cavanaugh, All Game Guide

Compete in all events or just choose a few. This ... makes a good party game if your friends like old video games because you can play with up to 9 people alternating.
