The Federal Trade Commission and the Attorney General of California have brought a permanent halt to an operation that sent millions of spam messages that violated federal and state laws. The settlement will bar future violations of the spam laws, will require the operators to monitor affiliates closely to assure that they are not violating state and federal laws, and requires that they give up approximately $475,000 in ill-gotten gains.

Hewlett-Packard said that it would pay $14.5 million to settle a lawsuit by the California attorney general over the company's use of private detectives to obtain private phone records of board members and journalists. The company is paying $650,000 in fines for "statutory damages," but the bulk of the money, $13.5 million, is going to create a state-administered Privacy and Piracy Fund. C[O]rporate Watch reports 30 citizens' organizations and individuals filed a 127-page petition seeking action by the California Attorney General to revoke the charter of the Union Oil Company of California (Unocal). Petitioning organizations include the Feminist Majority Foundation, National Organization for Women (NOW), Rainforest Action Network, Global Exchange, Earth Island Institute, Free Burma Coalition, the Alliance for Democracy, the Program on Corporations, Law and Democracy, and others.

The metadata on the Word document shows that it has been edited/reviewed by the Motion Picture Association of America. Another example of Hollywood using the US government to push its agenda to blame and limit technology which it views as a threat.
