Caliban: Caliban Computing
built 214 days ago
Named after the wild and deformed slave in Shakespeare's "Storm", Caliban are five German musicians who despite their young age are already seen as veterans of the European metal-core scene. The strange mix of animal-like coarseness, diabolical ruse and mighty impetuosity not only makes Caliban one of the most important characters in Shakespeare's dramas but ... the patron saint to the musical orientation of this quintet from Germany's Ruhr region. Within just a few years they have become one of the most important and influential bands of that genre. Formed in 1997 (under the name Never Again) Caliban signed to Lifeforce Records after recording a two song promo tape. The release of their self-titled EP in the summer of 1998 was the start of a co-operation which was to lay the foundation of Caliban's incredible success. Countless tours all over Europe including a few support gigs for bands like Morning Again, Earth Crisis and Cro-Mags strengthened their reputation and got them an ever increasing army of Caliban "apostles".

The Caliban-Prospero encounter in Shakespeare's The Tempest has evolved as a metaphor for the colonial experience. The present study utilizes the Caliban symbol in examining the influence of colonialism in Caribbean literature, focusing on the works of three major writers from the Caribbean islands: Jean Rhys, of British descent from Dominica; George Lamming, of African origin from Barbados; and Sam Selvon, of mixed Indian and Scottish heritage from Trinidad. The works chosen are set in England where the writers and their characters experience a double displacement, the alienation of the exiled in the country that once colonized their own islands. They are outsiders: unwelcome in Prospero's home country.

Caliban, who has been neutered for years, seems to have managed to duplicate himself through force of will alone. In 05, in the Lost Civilzations litter, Sazi was born, and in many ways in both temperament and looks, she seems more Calibans daughter than she is Gideons. Caliban spends more time playing with his"daughter" than he does with any of the other house hounds now, and he especially enjoys running and dancing on the beach with her..

After M-Day, Caliban turned up at the Xavier institute as a member of the 198. He is seen carrying the 198 banner, created by Erg, during the confrontation with O*N*E* over the "tracking chips" and again during Mr. M's exodus from the institute. He later helps the 198 escape with Domino and Shatterstar to one of Nick Fury's secret bases in the Nevada desert. Caliban was able to sense the stockpile of weapons in the base, but they were activated and locked down by Johnny Dee, a mutant who had puppet-like control over a fraction of the team. The original X-Men team went to collect the 198 but Bishop's pro-registration team stopped them. After a short battle, the two sides teamed up and, thanks to a joint effort by Cyclops and Bishop, were able to free the 198.

Caliban eventually began to suffer crippling seizures that seemingly had no cause. After aiding Cable against an assault on the Xavier Institute by Bastion’s Operation: Zero Tolerance forces, Caliban was taken by Ozymandias, the immortal indentured servant of Apocalypse, who revealed that the seizures were a result of Caliban’s past alteration. Returned to Apocalypse, Caliban was reshaped into the Horseman Pestilence. At Apocalypse’s behest, Caliban successfully captured both Cable and his alternate reality (Earth-295) counterpart Nate Grey. Caliban and the Horsemen were defeated during battle with X-Men when they were teleported away by Mikhail Rasputin. Subsequently, Caliban tracked down Cyclops, who had merged with Apocalypse and who was struggling to keep the eternal mutant’s essence in check.
