Caesar Augustus issued a decree and set the whole world moving. What power there is in a word. Caesar speaks and everyone is uprooted. They all return to their native place. Caesar's word calls people back to their roots.

Like Caesar, Augustus had no legitimate son, although he married three times. By his second wife Scribonia he had a daughter, Julia, who had children by her marriage to Marcus Vipsanius Agrippa, but Julia's sons Gaius and Lucius died before he did. Finally he married Livia, a member of the powerful Claudian family, and adopted her son Tiberius Claudius. Tiberius succeeded peacefully in AD 14 when Augustus died, aged 76, in his bed: a feat few of his successors were to manage.

History bore out Caesar's prophecy, largely through the wiles of his grand- nephew and adopted son, the ruthlessly ambitious youth who was to become Caesar Augustus. As victor in his own civil wars, Augustus maintained an ostentatious facade of Republican government, while keeping real power in his own grasp. When he died in A.D. 14, after more than 40 years of rule, Augustus had come near outliving the Republic's very memory, and by destroying, co- opting or intimidating the old governing elite into submission, he delivered Rome into the hands of the emperors.
