The 2005 Cadillac XLR looks cool, but it really sets itself apart with its performance. The engine responsible for this is a 4.6-liter Northstar VVT (variable valve timing) V8 with 320 horsepower at 6400 rpm and 310 lb-ft of torque at 4400 rpm. The engine has been extensively re-engineered for the luxury roadster, and it marks the Northstar's first adaptation to rear-wheel-drive (RWD) and all-wheel-drive (AWD) configurations. The engine is mated to the Hydra-Matic 5L50-E 5-speed automatic transmission, which offers three performance features normally found individually on luxury sport sedans: driver shift control, performance algorithm shifting and performance algorithm liftfoot. The 2007 Cadillac XLR Roadster starts from $78,920. Powered by a 320 horsepower 4.6-liter V8 with a six-speed electronic transmission, the XLR gets approximately 17 mpg city and 27 highway on an 18-gallon tank. With seating for two, the XLR offers 37.6 inches of headroom with the top down and 42.6 inches of leg room. Cargo space varies from 11.6 cubic feet to 4.4 depending on the position of the top.

The Cadillac XLR comes with a host of safety features, most designed to keep the car from getting into an accident in the first place. Four-wheel antilock disc brakes and stability control are standard, as are side airbags. Because the XLR is a two-seater, the passenger-side front airbag can be switched off to accommodate children in safety seats.

Targeted at the affluent suburbanite, the Cadillac XLR is a bold step for a company that not long ago was watching its customers disappear into managed-care facilities. And with the arrival of the V model, unless its detractors are driving very expensive imported iron, this two-seater will leave them for dead.
