Caddo Indians: United States

At different times in its long and colorful history, Caddo Lake has been home to the Caddo Indians, a band of outlaws, and the first over-the-water drilling platform in the United States. (Photo courtesy of the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department)
The Caddos built other significant structures that single them out from the other Indians of Texas. They built large, round beehive-shaped houses that varied in size from fifteen to fifty feet in diameter6, depending on the status of the individuals involved. These houses were twenty to thirty feet tall and were made of layers of thatch enclosing a tall frame of poles bound together at the top. Houses were built communally and housed as many as eight to ten families or thirty to forty people.
Local legend states that Nacogdoches - the oldest town in Texas - is named for the Caddo family of Indians who once lived in the area. There is a legend that tells of an old Caddo chief who lived near the Sabine River and had twin sons. When the sons grew to manhood and were ready to become leaders of their own tribes, the father sent one brother three days eastward toward the rising sun. The other brother was sent three days toward the setting sun.

After the United States purchased Louisiana in 1803, the competition for the trade and favor of the Caddos was between Spain and the United States, with both countries vying with gifts for the favor of the Indians. Texas, after it became a republic in 1836, was jealous of the United States government’s influence over the Caddos and was ... angered at the government’s movement of the Caddos from Louisiana and Arkansas into northeast Texas.
Visit other Real Cities Sites Banks will narrate a slide presentation about the Caddo Indians, who are one of the most sophisticated and highly organized pre-historic cultures in the United States. The name “Texas” comes from one of the groups of Caddo Indians, as do many other place and food names. The empire was centered in Arkansas, included much of northeast Texas and eastern Oklahoma.
The area west of the Red River was still the domain of the Caddo Indians. This changed in 1835... when the United States purchased the land from the Caddo and opened it up to settlers.
