Byron Nelson was a rancher. Played golf, too, but that was basically a means to come up with a grubstake. The ranch always came first. Golf was just another landscape. And history . . . well, that just sort of cropped up.

IRVING, Texas – Byron Nelson, golf legend and gentleman rancher, leaned on a cane in each hand as he walked into the room. Wearing his trademark fedora, he sat down for a one-on-one interview and strapped on a portable oxygen unit he has used for about three years, up to 20 hours per day. He says his memory isn’t what it was a couple of years ago, particularly recalling names. He gets around mainly by motorized scooter. He doesn’t spend as many daily hours as in past years at the PGA Tour event named after him. And for the first time since 1935 he didn’t attend the Masters.

Byron Nelson still holds three other records set in 1945. They are, 113 consecutive times finishing in the money, 19 consecutive rounds under 70 and the lowest annual scoring average of 68.33. Nelson went on to win a further six PGA tournaments in 1946 and then announced his retirement at the end of the year, he was only 34 years of age. Byron Nelson always said that he played golf in order to make enough money to someday purchase his dream, a Texas ranch. His dream came true in 1947 when he purchased a 750 acre ranch between Dallas and Fort Worth, where he lives today with his wife Peggy.
Byron Nelson was born in Texas in 1912, within 6 months of two other all-time greats - Ben Hogan and Sam Snead. In fact, as a child, he caddied along side Hogan at a Texas golf club. The two champions, never great friends, were rivals until Nelson retired early at the age of 34 in 1946. Nelson first became entranced with the game after watching Walter Hagen play an exhibition in his hometown. Of course it didn’t hurt when Hagen singled Nelson out in the gallery and gave him his hat. After receiving the unexpected gift, Nelson ran home and announced to his mother - he was going to be a professional golfer, just like Walter Hagen!
