Buttons and Mindy are characters that were regularly featured on the animated children's television show Animaniacs. Their segments centered around three characters: Buttons (voiced by Frank Welker), a heroic German shepherd-type dog; Mindy Sadlier (voiced by Nancy Cartwright), an accident-prone female toddler; and Mindy's mother (voiced by Tress MacNeille), who was often referred to as "Lady" by Mindy. One never saw above her waist, though her brown hair can be seen briefly in the Animaniacs movie Wakko's Wish. Mindy ... had a father (voiced by Frank Welker), who appeared in a few episodes.

Buttons can therefore have rollover, depressed, and disabled images. Buttons can even animate when certain conditions are met by switching between animated and static images (e.g., the Netscape throbber has a style rule that switches to an animated gif when a busy attribute is set on the button element).

"Buttons" was released to radio in late April/early May in the United States. It started well in the U.S. In the months of May, June and July, it slowly climbed the charts and near the end of July suddenly shot into the top five on the Billboard Hot 100 and peaked at number four[1] due to strong digital sales and the embracing of its remixes by DJs across the country. In September, the song reached number three.[1] Though it had always been available digitally, the song kept gaining momentum in digital sales during the summer of 2006, allowing its popularity to expand. This ... helped the song breakthrough the top ten on the pop radio charts as it shot through the top ten, finally reaching number one at the end of August.[1] PCD are only one of three artists in 2006 to have two different number ones on top-forty radio, the other artists being Beyoncé with "Check on It" and "Irreplaceable" and Justin Timberlake with "SexyBack" and "My Love". "Stickwitu" was the other PCD song to reach number one on radio that year, staying there for two weeks in January 2006.[1]
