Throughout her life, Butterfly McQueen has made education a top priority. As early as 1946 she began taking courses in political science, Spanish, drama, dance, and music, first at the City College of Los Angeles and then at the University of California at Los Angeles, Southern Illinois University, Queen's College, and New York University. In June of 1975, at the age of 64, she was one of 3,500 students to receive a bachelor's degree during commencement ceremonies at New York's City College. She has ... devoted much of her time and energy to community service work, helping out in the offices of city politicians and serving as a playground supervisor at an elementary school in Harlem. "Show business is only my hobby," she said in an interview with People. "My main job is community work."

Members Wayne Healy, Simon Horrocks and Marty Lloyd remain in the band, but brothers Jim & Rob Bonaccorsi (bass & guitar, respectively) have left the band (to start a project known as Butterfly McQueen). The Freddy Jones Band dissolved around 1999 and sat quietly until a August 2005 benefit concert brought the band back together. After the reunion, the band booked one more concert in Chicago for the New Years celebration at Navy Pier 2006 after which they began scheduling concerts for Spring 2006 in Colorado.

In Butterfly McQueen Remembered, author Stephen Bourne, who corresponded with Butterfly for many years, draws upon two decades of research to document her life and career. From her memorable role in one of Hollywood`s greatest films to her last big screen appearance opposite Harrison Ford in The Mosquito Coast, the details of McQueen`s life are captured in this intimate portrait. Bourne chronicles the ups and downs of this talented and generous woman`s life, both in front of the camera and far from its glaring spotlight.
Butterfly McQueen and Vivien Leigh It is little known that Butterfly McQueen was a life-long Atheist. "As my ancestors are free from slavery," she said, "I am free from the slavery of religion."* The Freedom from Religion Foundation (FFRF) honored her as a "Freethought Heroine" in 1989 — the same year in which she was recognized during the 50th anniversary of Gone With the Wind. She had been an FFRF member since 1981 and remembered the organization in her will.
Bonus: Butterfly McQueen was the squeeky-voiced little slave in "Gone With the Wind" with, of course, Vivien Leigh. Ms. Leigh made "A Streetcar Named Desire" with Marlon Brando; Mr. Brando to Donald Sutherland in "A Dry White Season"; Mr. Sutherland to Mr. Bacon in "JFK."
Butterfly McQueen sued Greyhound Buslines in 1980 when she was assaulted in a bus station by a guard who thought she was a pickpocket. Thrown roughly onto a bench, the 69 year-old actress had several of her ribs damaged.
