Butalbital is a member of the barbituric acid family of barbiturates that are commonly known for their central nervous system (CNS) depressant activity. There are about 10 members of this family that are currently in use. Butalbital and it's relatives have a very strong sedative effect with symptoms including drowsiness, confusion, coma, respiratory depression, hypertension, and hypovolemic shock. The drugs are especially well absorbed from the gastrointestinal tract and are likely to cross the placental barrier and may appear in breast milk. Like many of the other barbiturates, butalbital has been demonstrated to be extremely habit-forming. Side effects including confusion, mental depression, chest pain, fever, and skin rash.

Barbiturates such as butalbital have been shown to increase the chance of birth defects in humans. Also, one study in humans has suggested that barbiturates taken during pregnancy may increase the chance of brain tumors in the baby. Butalbital may cause breathing problems in the newborn baby if taken just before or during delivery.
