Followed by his faithful cow, Buster Keaton sets out to find his fortune on the frontier in his wonderful Western spoof. Plus, Buster's fascination with gadgets is evident in the short "The Scarecrow" (1920), and he then returns to the prairie and is taken in by an Indian tribe as "The Paleface." 108 min. total. Standard; Soundtrack: music score. Silent with music score.
Buster Keaton was well known for his wide range of facial expressions. Buster Keaton was born in 1895, and was like most people of that time: unfunny, proper and boring. At the age of 15, he was learning how to crochet when he accidentally stabbed himself in the brain. This damaged the boring lobe of his brain, and as a result, he decided he wanted to pursue a career in comedy. And not Bill Maher comedy, real comedy! So he studied the works of Oscar Wilde and Henrik Ibsen, and mastered the art of physical comedy by the age of 17. This is ... the same age he lost his virginity to a (the ever famous ocupation of) meat packer's daughter named Helga - a fat, ugly woman, but a woman nonetheless.
Buster [M]ade six two-reelers with Arbuckle in California - A Country Hero (1917), in which Joe Keaton ... appeared. Out West, The Bell Boy. Moonshine, Good Night, Nurse! and The Cook (all 1918). He was then drafted in mid-1918 and spent seven months entertaining the troops in France. During this time he caught an ear infection that rendered him partially deaf for the rest of his life.
Buster Keaton stars along with Fatty Arbuckle in two memorable comedies. "GOOD NIGHT NURSE" and "OUT WEST"are vintage slapstick comedies that offer a splendid blend of farce, pantomime and chase. Also on this festival is "THE LOVE NEST" featuring Buster in one of his prime 20's comedies.

Buster stars opposite an affectionate cow in this western farce that demonstrates Keaton's skill at pathos without lessening his own aptitude for epic slapstick. Includes THE SCARECROW (1920) and THE PALEFACE (1921). Total time: 116 min.

While Buster insisted that his father Joe Keaton taught him all he knew about vaudeville, it was Roscoe (Fatty) Arbuckle who taught him about the movies in more than a dozen films they made together. For many years it was thought that half of them had been lost but eight, including three of the `lost' films (Out West, The Bell Boy, Goodnight Nurse), have recently become available on 16mm and have been added to the Collection.
