George Bush was the first Vice President to move directly to the White House by election since Martin Van Buren did so in 1836. His term was marked by few domestic initiatives, but he took bold action in foreign affairs, using the military to depose Panamanian dictator Manuel Noriega in 1989 and to repel Iraq's invasion of Kuwait in 1991.

He left in November 1923 to become president of sales for Stedman Products in South Braintree, Massachusetts. He was a decorated naval combat pilot in the Pacific during the Second World War despite the fact that he was the youngest pilot in the U.S. Navy. After the war he graduated from Yale University, and moved to Texas to work as an oil executive.
