Bush: Bush Republicans
built 214 days ago
"President Bush may not be at the Republican debate, but make no mistake, four Bush Republicans will be on stage tonight," said Democratic National Committee Chairman Howard Dean. "The Republican presidential candidates offer no new ideas, just a third Bush term. Americans are already turning out in record numbers to put an end to eight years of failed economic policies and a never ending war in Iraq that's been a distraction to fighting and winning the real war on terror. The contrast between the Republican debate tonight and the Democratic debate tomorrow will make the choice clear: Republicans represent the past, and Democrats represent the future."

In addition to having become a millionaire in his own right, Bush was ... active in local Republican politics and served as Houston County party chairman. In 1964 he took a leave of absence from his firm, Zapata Petroleum, to challenge incumbent Democratic Senator Ralph Yarborough. Bush campaigned as a Goldwater Republican, opposing civil rights legislation, calling for U.S. withdrawal from the United Nations should the Peoples Republic of China be admitted, and demanding a cutback in foreign aid spending. The strategy of Goldwater Republicans had been to promote a conservative realignment, specifically leading to Republican congressional victories in the South and Southwest. This strategy failed, and Bush also lost decisively in what was a nationwide Democratic landslide.

-- While President Bush is in California today to speak on the economy, all of the Republican presidential candidates are preparing to debate tonight at the Ronald Reagan Presidential Library in Simi Valley, California. Though he'll be in their backyard, President Bush will noticeably be absent from the debate. But try as they might, the Republican candidates won't be able to run away from the failed record of Bush Republicans. The fact is, a vote for any of the Republican candidates is a vote for a third Bush term, and that's the last thing the American people want.
Since Bush had already been declared the winner, even if only provisionally, there was no way in hell that the Republicans were willing to roll the dice again. There was just no possible upside, only downside. In contrast, the Democrats had no possible downside in another roll of the dice, so they insisted on recounts. Legal battles raged for weeks. The Florida state Supreme Court ruled in favor of the Democrats, but the U.S. Supreme Court overruled them in a 5-4 decision. Thus the recounts were halted, Gore conceded, and Bush was declared the winner.

Bush Republicans support millionaires instead of military veterans. Bush allies in Congress stopped efforts to scale back the tax cut for the nation's millionaires by just five percent - a loss of just $4,780 for the year - in order to restore this funding for military family housing.

Autism Speaks, Community, Message Boards It was only the fourth veto of Bush's presidency, and one that some Republicans feared could be used against them in next year's elections. The Senate approved the bill with enough votes to override the veto, but the margin in the House fell short of the required number.
