We are based in Denmark where we are arranging concerts and art excebitions, trying to raise money to keep this website running, and trying to get some focus on Burundi and the big problems the nation is facing on its long and troubled road to peace.

After a long civil war during which some 300,000 people have been killed since 1993, Burundi completed the last step of the transitional period outlined in the peace plan signed in Arusha, Tanzania, in 2000. Its presidential election—held August 19, 2005—ended the three-year transitional period. Burundi faces the challenges of maintaining stability and building political institutions that allow its democracy to grow stronger.

The UN Operation in Burundi (ONUB) completed its mandate on December 31, 2006 and has been replaced by a UN Integrated Office in Burundi (BINUB) which will continue the process of peace in the region. Amongst other things, Resolution 1719 enshrines BINUB’s aims to tackle poverty, protect human rights and combat impunity through a Truth and Reconciliation Commission and a Special Tribunal.
navigation The United States is offering to provide logistical support if an international peacekeeping force is formed for Burundi, but said it will not provide U.S. troops. No other Western nation is willing to commit troops either, despite pleas from the United Nations.

It will be many years before the scars of war are healed in Burundi. But now that peace has come, the emphasis of Tearfund’s work is shifting back from emergency response to long-term development.
