Although Chinese silk seems to have become popular in Rome as early as the beginning of the Common Era, the background for understanding the silk trade of Anatolia and more particularly Bursa must be sought in the world of Byzantium. Traditional accounts about how knowledge of silk production spread from China stress the fact that the process was a closely guarded secret. The classic story concerning the beginnings of the silk industry in Byzantium is typical. The sixth-century historian Procopius wrote:
Mr Bursa had his camera with him and couldn’t resist a shot that appears to stand testimony to the fact that like John Lennon and JFK, the great man has had an airport named after him. He ... snapped a nice portrait shot of Mr Marchionne - as Mark summed it up: tab, jumper, dude. And he's turned Fiat around. He's done his bit and is waiting for others to come in and carry on the good work. If he wants to go for the jumper rather than the sharp suit, he's more than entitled to.

The city of Bursa, southeast of the Sea of Marmara, lies on the lower slopes of Uludag (Mt. Olympos of Mysia, 2443 meters). The city derives its name from its founder Prusias, King of Bithynia. It subsequently came under Roman, then Byzantine rule before falling to Osman Bey in 1326 becoming the first capital of the Ottoman Empire. Many important Ottoman buildings remain.
Bursa is full of historical works of art. The Ottoman Sultan, Yildirim Beyazit, had the Mosque of Yildirim constructed in the year 1399. Another one of the interesting works of art in the city is the Ulu Cami located at the center of the city. It was constructed between the years 1396 and 1400, and was placed on twelve elephant feet and has 20 domes. There is a fountain and a remarkable niche inside the mosque and there are ... examples of the art of ornamental calligraphy of that time. This mosque was the greatest mosque of the Ottomans in those years.
