Burlington Coat Factory has built its success on anticipating customer needs and providing great value. That philosophy extends to its datacenter, where Intel® architecture servers have cost-effectively powered massive Oracle databases for more than 20 years. When the company moved some of its biggest and most critical databases to Oracle Database 10g*, it wanted to take advantage of that database’s ability to run in a grid environment and provide sophisticated storage management. Burlington Coat Factory wanted a hardware platform with the performance to flexibly power complex database queries and to provide cost-effective scalability, high availability, and lowcost management.

Operating in an Oracle 11i ERP environment, Burlington Coat Factory’s Human Resources (HR) department employees struggled to obtain the reports they required to effectively manage their responsibilities. Burlington’s HR personnel found Oracle Report Writer too complex for their specific needs and therefore required the expertise of their IT department every time they wanted a customized report. In many cases, they required the critical information immediately, but had to wait up to two days for IT to deliver because of the overall complexity of the database structure and reporting tool set. The two IT people dedicated to approximately 50 HR end users simply could not keep up with the demands for information, especially because each end user, from the Benefits Manager to the Regional Store Managers, required very different views of their unique operational data.
