Two key elements of the culture of Burkina Faso are masks and dancing. The masks used in this region are made for producing sacrifices to the gods and animal spirits around the peoples' villages, to show them they are wanting to be blessed by these spirits.

"Burkina Faso" is a combination of the Mossi ethnic groupʼs language, called More and the Bobo groupʼs Gur. This was an effort by then president Thomas Sankara to ensure continued harmony between these two groups.

Burkina Faso has embarked successfully on a democratization process. This is in spite of complex open conflicts that plague the sub-region, especially in Côte d’Ivoire, where Burkina Faso has major strategic interests. The democratic process is generally well underway, despite a few glitches such as the ‘Zongo affair’. These blips unfortunately give foreigners a negative impression of BurkinaFaso. Politically, though, elections are generally calm and by universal suffrage, thanks to continually increasing voter turnout. This shows Burkina Faso’s attachment to the democratic openness it acquired in 1991.

AIDS: Since 1988, the government of Burkina Faso had adopted an overt and progressive approach towards the prevention of AIDS. In 1989, the National Committee in the Fight Against AIDS (CNLS) with l’Organisation Mondial de la Sante (OMS) developed a plan for a period of three years followed by a second three year plan. The CNLS will be developing a new strategic plan in 1997.

Much of Burkina Faso is populated by descendants of the Mossi empire, founded when a band of horsemen from nearby Ghana galloped through at the turn of the 15th century. The Mossi organized an empire that developed courts of law, administrative bodies, ministerial positions and a cavalry to protect its realm.

A Burkina Faso women’s forum was organized in 1994. The gathering – under the august auspices of the Head of State - adopted important recommendations to ensure that women’s issues are taken more fully into account in the development process.
