Bulge: Battle Of The Bulge
built 658 days ago
Although nor related to the "Battle of the Bulge", this special memorial in Diekirch is worth visiting. The "Kreizwée" or stations of the cross is a memorial commemorating the tragic fate of the Luxembourgers of the years of birth (1920-1926), who were forcibly recruited by the nazi occupant into the German army. A descriptive narrative of each of the fourteen stations (bronze plaques) composing the memorial, is available as a folder at the museum.
Axis & Allies Battle of the Bulge features detailed game components including a new truck piece, a hex-based game board with original artwork. Other elements of this new Axis & Allies variant include circumstances that played key factors in the historical battle, such as supply shortages and late-battle air support, mechanics for overland vs. road movement, and randomized war casualties.

The Battle of the Bulge began with the German attack (Operation Wacht am Rhein and the Herbstnebel plan) on the morning of December 16, 1944. Two later attacks on New Year's Day 1945 attempted to create second fronts in Holland (Operation Schneeman) and in northern France (Operation Nordwind).
Battle of the Bulge The German offensive in December 1944 became the basis for this all-star Hollywood take on the Battle of the Bulge. Henry Fonda is an officer who predicts the assault, Robert Ryan and Dana Andrews are Army brass skeptical of his intuitions, and Robert Shaw (his hair dyed yellow and his eyes glinting with malice) is a German officer leading the tank attack. Shaw is certainly the most compelling thing about the film, especially in his philosophical debates with ambivalent underling Hans Christian Blech. Elsewhere, the movie jumps around to sidebar stories (cowardly James MacArthur becomes a leader, wheeler-dealer Telly Savalas falls in love) while messing around with the historical facts of the battle. There are interesting episodes, such as the Malmedy massacre of American POWs and the Germans' use of English-speaking spies, but overall Battle of the Bulge has the feeling of having been patched together from different scripts. On the physical level the movie comes up short, with the Spanish locations rarely suggesting the wintry misery of the battle, and the use of models and studio sets highly inadequate.

After experiencing WWII Barracks life and reveille, the CC’s participated in a field tactical exercise commemorating the Battle of the Bulge, 1945. The 101st attacked and seized a key hill and road intersection with light casualties. The Germans sent a counter attack led by a company of Panzer Grenadiers, several half-tracks and Armored Cars, and Kubelwagens (a German Jeep). The USMAPS CC Paratroopers were forced to withdraw to another position to wait for Allied tanks and "leg Infantry" to arrive. For those who hold viewing the film "Saving Private Ryan" as a good professional development film, this reenactment was a similar (albeit bloodless) "virtual reality" experience for them.

At 5:30 a.m. on December 16, 1944 , the German army staged its major surprise attack (known as the "Battle of the Bulge" or "Battle of the Ardennes"). After a 30-minute intense artillery and "Nebelwerfer"rocket barrage, German troops of the 352nd VGD, crossed the Our river in the Wallendorf-Gentingen sector to assault the outnumbered American positions on the Hoesdorf-Bettendorf plateau(please visit similar historical circuit on the Luxembourg side, starting at Hoesdorf or Bettendorf). The objective was to capture the vital road to Diekirch and Ettelbruck as well as the Sauer (Sûre) river bridges in this sector. After three days of constant intense fighting in the woods with numerous casualties on both sides, the remaining troops of the 109th U.S. Infantry Regiment withdrew in direction of Diekirch and further south, destroying the Sûre (Sauer) river bridges, with the 352nd VGD succeeding in gaining terrain until shortly after Christmas 1944, when counterattacked by elements of Gen. Patton's Third U.S. Army.
