In the fall of 2002, Sunnydale High School reopened and Buffy took a job as a counselor to help trouble teens. She meets Robin Wood, the new Principal who reveals that his mother Nikki Wood was a Slayer and that she was killed by Spike in the 1970s. Buffy ... learns from Giles that 'The First Evil' is killing off the line of slayers to reopen The Hellmouth. So, with the help of Giles and the Scooby Gang, Buffy helps train a new line of potential Slayers to help battle the upcoming Armageddon. To learn more about her roots, Buffy used a bag containing personal items belonging to slain Slayer Nikki Woods to open a time portal and travels back in time to meet the First Slayer and its creators. Buffy Summers and her gang know that Sunnydale is a haven for outsiders, whether of the supernatural or strictly adolescent variety. Shy transfer student Kevin Sanderson is no exception. But Kevin instantly finds a mentor in Daniel, a paleontologist and fellow dino-phile at the Sunnydale Museum of Natural History. When Buffy starts hearing rumors of alligators in the sewers, she has to wonder about Kevin and Daniel's hobbies.

At Sunnydale High, Buffy meets several other students willing to join her fight for good (alongside her friends Willow and Xander). Cordelia Chase (Charisma Carpenter), the archetypal shallow cheerleader, reluctantly becomes involved, and Daniel "Oz" Osbourne (Seth Green), a fellow student, rock guitarist and werewolf, joins the Scooby Gang through his relationship with Willow. Anya (Emma Caulfield), a former vengeance demon (Anyanka) who specialized in avenging scorned women, becomes Xander's lover after losing her powers, and joins the Scooby Gang in the fourth season.
