Buffy the Vampire Slayer is an American cult television series that initially aired from March 10, 1997 until May 20, 2003. It was created by writer-director Joss Whedon under his production tag, Mutant Enemy. The series narrative follows Buffy Anne Summers (played by Sarah Michelle Gellar), the latest in a line of young women chosen by fate to battle against vampires, demons, and the forces of darkness. Like previous slayers, Buffy is aided by a Watcher, who guides and trains her. Unlike her predecessors, Buffy surrounds herself with a circle of loyal friends who become known as the "Scooby Gang."

Berman was persistent, a trait that she would quickly become known for, and in March of 1997 Buffy the Vampire Slayer debuted on the small screen. Over the next six years Buffy was a hit on both the WB and UPN networks, garnering a huge following and making a star out of the show's lead, Sarah Michelle Gellar (1977–). Berman, along with Whedon, served as executive producer of Buffy and the show's successful spinoff, Angel. According to future boss Sandy Grushow, who spoke with Michael Freeman of Electronic Media, Berman proved that she had "an innate ability to create programming that taps into what appeals to younger viewers. Simply put, Gail has her finger on very contemporary sensibilities."

The Buffy comics are published by Dark Horse, which has retained the right to produce from 1998 onwards.[58] In 2003, Whedon wrote an eight-issue miniseries for Dark Horse Comics entitled Fray, about a Slayer in the future. Following the publication of Tales of the Vampires in 2004, Dark Horse Comics halted publication on Buffyverse-related comics and graphic novels. The company has recently announced that Whedon will be producing another comic series with twenty issues beginning in March 2007, to pick up where the television show left off — taking the place of an eighth canonical season.[59] The first story arc is ... written by Whedon, and is called "The Long Way Home" which has been widely well-received, with circulation rivalling industry leaders DC and Marvel's top-selling titles.[60]

Buffy the Vampire Slayer was more than just another teen television show - it was a cultural phenomenon. Series creator Joss Whedon poured his heart and soul into “Once More With Feeling”, the surprisingly effective (and affecting) musical episode from Buffy’s sixth season. He wrote and composed all the songs, each one catered to the cast and character’s strengths, and even extended the length of the show in order to cram in more music.

THE CHOSEN COLLECTION — FYI: A new DVD box set is being released containing all seven seasons of Buffy, plus some new extras. The Chosen Collection, due out on November 15, 2005, will be presented in fancy new packaging (see image). As far as the season DVDs go, these are the same DVDs that have previously been released in individual season sets (same extras, same commentaries, same transfer). However, the set will include an additional disc containing new extra features, a booklet filled with episode listings and Buffy quotes, and a letter from Joss Whedon. The letter, booklet, and bonus disc won't be available anywhere else.
