built 178 days ago
For Buddhism, as in Hinduism, this is the moral law of cause and effect. People build up karma (both good and bad) as a result of their actions. This then determines the state of existence to which one is reborn after birth. In Buddhism, the different levels can include hells, humans or animals in this world, or one of several heavens.

Buddhism has no place for the supernatural. The Buddha tackled this question immediately in order to benefit his disciples. In the sermon, On the Nonexistence of the Soul he outlined the problem of consciousness, as he understood it. He argued, the body cannot be the eternal soul, for the body dies. Neither do sensation, perception, the predispositions, and consciousness together constitute the eternal soul, for all these attributes are transitory; and, what is transitory is evil; and, what is transitory and evil and liable cannot be called an "eternal soul." The true disciple will develop disgust for the body, sensation, dispositions, and consciousness, and ... divested of desire will be freed, will become aware that he is freed, will know that becoming or rebirth is exhausting, that he has lived the pure life, and now the cycle of birth and rebirth, time of mortality, is ended.

In addition to the historical significance of text comparison among scholars interested in Buddhism, this manuscript is ... an important work of Chinese calligraphy from the 13th Century. This manuscript is signed by An Wan Zhu Shi and its calligraphic style is similar to several 13th Century calligraphers such as Zhang Jizhi. This special exhibition displays the entire 70 page manuscript in clear, digitized, close-up photographs. Viewers of this online exhibition can enjoy Mumonkan text word-by-word in its original Chinese character of the 13th Century.

There is disagreement among scholars about the dates of the Buddha's birth and death. Most scholars in Europe, the United States, and India believe that the historical Buddha lived from about 563 to about 483 BC. Many others, especially in Japan, believe that he lived about 100 years later (from about 448 to 368 BC). It is undisputed that he was born in Lumbini which was a part of India but is now in Nepal, and
