Though there is a mention of a Cave of Monsters when beginning the NES version (it is only a copy of the opening script of Bubble Bobble), there isn't one in the game. Most of the game takes place under skies, though the world bosses' levels take place in caves.

In the Bubble Bobble game you play one or pair of little dragons against enemies. Dragons can blow bubbles to catch enemies inside. After that you should jump on bubble with an enemy trapped inside and pop them! To increase your score pick up items: fruits, vegetables, diamonds, jewels etc. You can ... pick up some bonus items to make your journey easy. Some of them increase speed, range of bubbles' firing, others give you a chance to get more score points or extra lives.

A cute platformer, starring Bub and Bob the dinosaurs, Bubble Bobble can be played either as a single player game or by two players on the same screen at once. The game was one of the first to allow co-operative play, as you play together to complete the 100 levels in the game to rescue your girlfriends. Your objective in each room is to clear the room of monsters to advance to the next stage.

The Super Bubble Bobble mode detailed above is ... entered in the same way as the cheat codes. To enter this code, while at the main Bubble Bobble logo screen enter '1P Start, Jump, Bubble, Left, Right, Jump, 1P Start, Right'. The game logo should change to include the word 'Super'.

BUBBLE BOBBLE has finally come to the NES. The premise is simple: take control of a bubble-blowing dinosaur and blow bubbles to trap a monster. After the monster is trapped, squash the bubble and turn the monster into fruit. Do this to all of the monsters in the stage, collect all of the fruit, and move on to the next stage. All of this easy to learn but very hard to master. If getting an arcade-perfect port of BUBBLE BOBBLE in not enough, the sequel to BUBBLE BOBBLE, is included as a bonus.
