Bryan Singer: Superman Returns
built 613 days ago

Bryan Singer, while at Wondercon, announced that the long anticipated Logans Run will move ahead once Superman Returns is complete. Bryan Singer told an audience at WonderCon that he would be adding his own touches to the 1976 movie. Based on his own concepts as well as the book. He figures the movie should come together sometime in 2008.

In mid-2004, Singer was in negotiations to direct X-Men 3 for Fox. Fox and Singer could not meet an agreement and, after an extended period of nothing happening, Singer was offered the chance to direct the new Superman film, which was ready to go. On July 19, 2004, Variety reported that Singer had signed on to direct Superman Returns for Warner Bros. In retaliation, Fox terminated their production deal with Bad Hat Harry Productions, Singer's production company. [6] Superman Returns was filmed in Australia in 2005, and was released on June 28, 2006. Singer claims that though he had not read the comics, he had always admired and identified with the character, citing the fact that he and Superman are both orphans. He instead based Returns on his love of the 1978 film made by Richard Donner.

For his part, Singer made multiple references to cut footage that will show up on his DVD Superman Returns. Clearly Superman Returns did well enough to convince both Singer and the studio to proceed to negotiate a sequel. Singer has ideas about what will be in it, too. He made the center of the first movie a love story, he said, and plans to offer more hazardous —and alien—sci-fi action adventure in the next. He blamed Pirates, Prada, marketing (some people did their jobs and some didn't, he suggested) and the poor $15 million North American showing of the fourth Superman movie on Returns' less-than-explosive boxoffice. He ... promised fans of the Superman comic books, many of whom felt that his Superman did not reflect the contemporary comic Superman, that he would update the character going forward.

Upon finishing Valkyrie at the end of 2007, Singer was scheduled to jump directly into the upcoming Superman sequel (rumored title: The Man of Steel) which was scheduled to begin filming around March 2008. Attending the 2007 Saturn Awards along with Superman Returns writers Michael Dougherty, Dan Harris and producer Gil Adler, Singer confirmed that the story had been locked down, and the first draft would be completed near the end of 2007. Among the plans for the sequel include more action sequences, an alien villain, and Singer's promise to "go all Wrath of Khan on it".

I’m just not that big a fans of Singer directed movies. His X-Men films have this sub-text about being ostracized because you’re different ie gay. Singer is gay. Superman Returns has this theme about being adopted. Singer is adopted. It’s fine that Singer sees something of himself in X-Men and Superman and brings that to the table.
