Brunei is situated on the North West coast, of the island of Borneo. Its 160km coastline faces the South China Sea and covers a total land mass of 3561.6 2 kms. (Approximately one quarter the size of the UK). Brunei has a common border with Sarawak, one of two Eastern States of Malaysia, which ... divides Brunei into two parts. The districts of Brunei/Maura, Tutong and Belait comprise the Western part of the State of Brunei. This area is one of lowland hills below 300 ft which begin to rise to over 1,000 ft near the Sarawak border.

The early king of Brunei was called Sang Aji, or Reverend Monarch, a title of Sanskrit origin. The Brunei ruling dynasty changed during the early 1360s when Awang Alak Betatar, a prince from a powerful kingdom in western Borneo, ascended the Brunei throne. He became the first Brunei ruler and the present ruler is his descendant.
