Diplomatic relations between Brunei Darussalam and the United States was formalized on the 10th March 1984. Relations were further enhanced when both countries set up their embassies at the two capitals respectively. Relations between the two countries continue to strengthen and involve cooperation in many areas such as political, economic and defense either bilaterally or cooperation through international organisations.

Relations between the United States and Brunei date from the 1800s. On April 6, 1845, the U.S.S. Constitution visited Brunei. The two countries concluded a Treaty of Peace, Friendship, Commerce and Navigation in 1850, which remains in force today. The United States maintained a consulate in Brunei from 1865 to 1867.

Brunei Darussalam welcomes foreign investment. Foreign investors are invited to actively participate in the current economic diversification programme of the country. The programme hinges on the development of the private sector. The Ministry of Industry and Primary Resources, which was formed in 1989, has the responsibility of promoting and facilitating industrial development in Brunei Darussalam.
Brunei is located in south-east Asia on the nothern coast of Borneo almost completely surrounded by Malaysia. It occupies a total area of 5,770 sq km of which 5,270 sq km is land. Brunei is officially an Islamic state, with many large beautiful mosques around the country. Sale of alcohol is banned. Bringing in meat, (other than seafood), which has not been certified "halal", (slaughtered according to Islamic law), is ... banned. During the fasting month of Ramadan, many shops and restaurants will be open however, eating, drinking or smoking in front of people who are fasting is considered rude and asking permission is appropriate.
