built 645 days ago
The Brunei Dollar is divided into 100 cents. There are banknotes from B$1 to a whopping B$10,000 (handy if you're shopping for Rolls-Royces) and coins of 1 to 50 cents . All smaller notes and the 2004 series of larger notes are in brightly coloured plastic.

The 1997–98 Asian economic crisis affected Brunei, which lost billions of dollars in investments. In 1998 the sultan’s son, Prince al-Muhtadee Billah, was installed as heir to the throne. After a 20-year hiatus, the sultan convened the appointed legislature in 2004 and signed a constitutional amendment calling for a 45-seat council with 15 elected members. However, the sultan dissolved the legislature in 2005 and appointed a new 29-member council.

The dollar, denoted by BND, is the official currency of Brunei. As Singapore is one of Brunei's major trading partners, the BND is pegged to the Singapore dollar at a 1:1 ratio. The Brunei dollar is ... known as "ringgit" locally in Malay, and this can be seen printed on the banknote itself. Polymer banknotes of the currency were introduced in 2004, due to high cases of banknote forgery.
