Bruce Springsteen: Songs
built 142 days ago
The 1987 concert was filmed at the famed Coconut Grove Ballroom in Los Angeles, shortly after Bruce Springsteen inducted Roy Orbison into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame. The all-star line-up of rock royalty set the stage for a concert that is still talked about to this day. Orbison kicks-off the evening with ``Only The Lonely.'' The awesome respect for Orbison and his illustrious string of hits is apparent on every song with Orbison's unmistakable and irreplaceable vocals in the lead. As the songs progress so does the momentum as Springsteen shares the mike on several of the hits. The evening ends with the entire cast gathering for a rousing rendition of ``Oh, Pretty Woman.''

(CBS)It's hard to picture, but Bruce Springsteen turned 58 last month. His breakout hit, "Born to Run," is 32 years old. While rock stars his age are content to tour with their greatest hits, Springsteen launched, last week, what may become his most controversial work as a songwriter.

Springsteen's music has long been intertwined with film. It made its first appearance in the 1983 John Sayles' film Baby, It's You, which featured several songs from Born to Run. The relationship Springsteen established with Sayles would re-surface in later years, with Sayles directing videos for songs from Born in the U.S.A. and Tunnel of Love. The song "(Just Around the Corner to the) Light of Day" was written for the early Michael J. Fox/Joan Jett vehicle Light of Day. His work has been used in films (winning him an Oscar for his song "Streets of Philadelphia"). Additionally his 1995 song "Secret Garden" appeared on the soundtrack for the Tom Cruise film Jerry Maguire.

In 1972, Springsteen's fortunes improved. At the age of 23, Springsteen signed a deal with fledgling songwriter-producer Mike Appel. This partnership helped Springsteen in the short term and jump-started his career, but the relationship would haunt him. Although Appel dedicated himself to Springsteen's career, he was considered by many to be too abrasive. However, Appel soon arranged for an audition with Columbia Records, and Springsteen impressed the executives and earned a recording contract.

In 1984 Springsteen met model/actress Julianne Phillips, and the couple married in May 1985. On Tunnel of Love (#1, 1987) Springsteen recorded some of his most personal songs- including the Grammy-winning “Tunnel of Love” (#9, 1987), “Brilliant Disguise” (#5, 1987), and “One Step Up” (#13, 1988) - in which he detailed love unraveling. The songs proved to be painfully honest. While he was headlining the 1988 Amnesty International Human Rights Now! Tour, tabloids began reporting that Springsteen and Scialfa were having an affair. In August 1988 Phillips filed for divorce.

During the lawsuits, Springsteen had success with other artists recording his music. As noted on the VH1 Website, Manfred Mann's Earth Band released a version of his song "Blinded By The Light" and Patti Smith recording a cover of his tune "Because The Night." The Pointer Sisters ... recorded his material. Ultimately, Springsteen won his case. Landau became his manager and producer, and Springsteen was in control of his catalog and career.
