DVD: Joe Lewis Fighting Systems - What Bruce Lee Taught Me Bruce Lee was born on November 27 1940 in San Francisco. He was born a Scorpio according to the western horoscope and born in the year of the Dragon in the Chinese calendar. He was ... born on the hour of the Dragon.
As a teenager and under his father’s guidance, Bruce attended the prestigious high schools in Hong Kong known as La Salle College and St. Francis Xavier’s College in the latter 1950s. Here, with great academic discipline, Lee learned much that sparked his interest in the studies of philosophy. After only a few years, Lee was sent to the United States to finish his high school studies. Following, he attended the University of Washington to continue his philosophical studies, but without finishing, went on to his birthplace of San Francisco and Hollywood to pursue his acting career.
Lee handed the scroll disdainfully back to their leader. "I'll teach whomever I choose," he said calmly. "I don't care what color they are." While Lee's non-racist views are today generally applauded, in San Francisco's Chinatown in the mid 1960s they were tantamount to treason -- at least within the Chinese community. Indeed, teaching Chinese combative "secrets" to non-Chinese races was perceived as the highest form of treason in the martial arts community. By his words and demeanor, Lee had effectively thrown the gauntlet back at the feet of his would-be challenger and, while Lee had many virtues, it is well known among his friends, family and students that patience in suffering fools and their ignorance was not one of them.

In 1959, at the age of 18, Lee got into a fight and badly beat his opponent, getting into trouble with the police.[10] His father became concerned about young Bruce's safety, and as a result, he and his wife decided to send Bruce to the United States to live with an old friend of his father's. Lee left with $100 in his pocket and the titles of 1958 Boxing Champion and the Crown Colony Cha Cha Champion of Hong Kong.[3] After living in San Francisco, he moved to Seattle to work for Ruby Chow, another friend of his father's. In 1959, Lee completed his high school education in Seattle and received his diploma from Edison Technical School. He enrolled at the University of Washington as a drama major and took some philosophy classes.[11] It was at the University of Washington that he met his future wife Linda Emery, whom he would marry in 1964.
