Brown Bear
built 629 days ago
Brown Bear, a five-month-old vintage clothing store and art gallery, is a newer addition to this mottled portion of Divisadero. Refusing to be any one thing, the store sells carefully picked vintage clothes for men and women, showcases new clothes and accessories from independent designers, and uses the wall space in the back as a gallery space. The diversity of art and fashion works -- window shoppers pop in for the clothes and end up meandering through the store.

Brown Bears have furry coats in shades of blonde, brown, black, or a combination of those colors. The longer outer guard hairs of the brown bear are often tipped with white or silver, giving a "grizzled" appearance. Brown bears have a large hump of muscle over their shoulders, which give strength to the forelimbs for digging. Bears are very powerful, even if considered pound for pound, a big specimen can break a neck or spine of a fully grown buffalo with a single blow. Forearms end in massive paws with very powerful claws up to 15 cm (5.9 inches) in length. Their heads are large and round with a concave facial profile.
The last Saturday of each month, Brown Bear hosts a free opening for the upcoming month's show. The store stays open late and friends and neighbors filter in an out -- many brown bagging beer or wine. Past shows included food and live music, but most just show the art and the store. Either way, it's a pleasing multi-sensory overload, especially for Plescia (who sculpts) and Rabut (a photographer), artists in their own right.

Normally a solitary animal, the Brown Bear congregates alongside streams and rivers during the salmon spawn in the fall. Every other year females produce one to four young, which weigh only about 1 to 2 kg (2 to 5 lb) at birth. Raised entirely by their mother, cubs are taught to climb trees when in danger.
Physical Characteristics: Whilst of variable dimensions, the average adult Brown bear stands at 100 centimetres, has a length of 200 centimetres and weighs between 150 and 375 kilograms. Males may weigh as much as twice the weight of females and have been recorded up to 680 kilograms!
The brown bears that remain in the forst of Europe are generally small. Those living in the remote Pyrenees or Alps may weight 91 kilograms or less, though some Scandinavian and Russian bears weight more than 340 kilograms.
