Brothers Grimm

The Brothers Grimm promised to be a well of Gilliam inspired anarchy and creativity for fans of the film director. Unfortunately it doesn't quite live up to that promise. While it isn't a masterpiece on the level of "Brazil" or "Time Bandits" (or even "The Fisher King"), it's not exactly a disaster either. There's enough of Gilliam's inspired lunacy in the film to make it worthwhile. While the Ehren Kruger ("The Ring," "The Ring 2," "Skeleton Key" but with considerable rewriting by Terry Gilliam in collaboration with Tony Grisoni) script doesn't take the opportunity to develop the characters or the situations to their full potential and the film's editing feels choppy during the first hour of the film, there's still much to be appreciated and enjoyed in Gilliam's film. The film felt like it could ... have been trimmed in the middle where the pacing lags a bit.

In Terry Gilliam’s The Brothers Grimm the eponymous siblings are dodgy dealing con artists of the early 1800’s who use their imaginations solely to profit from fearful folk, scared of the witches and wizardry the brothers themselves have invented. When the brothers are revealed to be charlatans the Napoleonic General, Delatombe (Jonathan Pryce), behests them on pain of death to investigate the disappearance of little girls from the French occupied German village of Marbaden. Will (Matt Damon) is the mercenary of the pair, and has cynically rebuked Jacob’s (Heath Ledger’s) obsession with magic; as a child Jacob sold the family cow for nothing but magic beans. However, Will is left eating his (little red riding) hat when the boys Grimm find themselves embroiled in a situation of true sorcery, including an enchanted forest and a narcissistic Mirror Queen, where the magnitude of the magic is beyond even their conniving capabilities.

The Brothers Grimm ... had an appearance in Code of Honor#3. They teamed up with Cottonmouth and Unicorn during "Secret Wars" against Luke Cage, Iron Fist and Falcon. Continuity-wise, this appearance is a problem as it would've occurred before the Grimes brothers found the costumes. Maybe someone else used the costumes for a short time and then returned them to the theater.

In the very early 19th century, the time in which the Brothers Grimm lived, the Holy Roman Empire had recently dissolved, and the modern nation of Germany did not exist. In its place was a confederacy of 39 small to medium-size German states, many of the states newly created by Napoleon when he reorganized Germany. The major unifying factor for the German people of the time was a common language. So part of what motivated the Brothers in their writings and in their lives was the desire to help create a German identity.

Four fascinating tales by The Brothers Grimm come alive in these bold new comics adaptations by three incredible graphic novelists. This edition of CLASSICS ILLUSTRATED features both the well-loved tales of Hansel and Gretel’s trip to the Witch’s Gingerbread House and the Valiant Little Tailor’s thrilling encounter with Giants, as well as the lesser known tales of the Boy Who Wanted to Learn What Fear Was who stays in a haunted castle and a boy’s quest to snatch the Devil’s Three Golden Hairs. Over the years, many elements from the original versions of these stories have either been omitted or blandly changed. These adaptations strive to restore all of the excitement, magic, and thrills of the original classic tales, in a tasteful and thoughtful manner.

The first dictionary of the Brothers Grimm, the 16 parts of which were issued between 1852 and 1860, remains the most comprehensive guide to the words of the German language. In 1860, grammatical and orthographic rules first appeared in the Duden Handbook. In 1901, this was declared the standard definition of the German language. Official revisions of some of these rules were not issued until 1998, when the German spelling reform of 1996 was officially promulgated by governmental representatives of all German-speaking countries. Since the reform, German spelling has been in an eight-year transitional period where the reformed spelling is taught in most schools, while traditional and reformed spellings co-exist in the media. See German spelling reform of 1996 for an overview of the public debate concerning the reform with some major newspapers and magazines and several known writers refusing to adopt it.
