The Brothers Grimm is a 2005 comedic fantasy directed by Terry Gilliam and written by Ehren Kruger. Matt Damon and Heath Ledger star as Will and Jake Grimm traveling con artists who encounter a real fairy-tale curse and are forced to dredge up genuine courage to fight off a real evil.

In a script by Ehren Krueger, the Brothers Grimm aren't simply the collectors of folk tales. They travel through French-occupied 18th century Germany (which Gilliam uses for an amusing "Casablanca" reference) as "Team Grimm," fake witch hunters and exorcists of wicked spells. until Will (Matt Damon) and Jake (Heath Ledger) encounter real evil magic.

A troubled Miramax production that was delayed for about a year, Terry Gilliam's "Brothers Grimm" is another signature Gilliam effort; while flawed and not one of the director's best, it's still an occasionally engaging and very surreal tale. The film stars the interesting pairing of Matt Damon and Heath Ledger as the Brothers of the title, who go around 1700's Germany building fairly elaborate fake scares in order to spook villagers who will call on them to rid their little towns of evil.

The plot postulates that the Brothers Grimm (Matt Damon and Heath Ledger) are con artists using folklore and superstition to make a living from ignorant peasants. When the Grimms are caught by the authorities they're given a choice; help the authorities unmask similar con artists who are kidnapping girls from a village or be executed. Needless to say, they decide to cooperate. What the Grimms find though is a genuine witch (Monica Bellucci) casting spells over the missing girls for her own evil reasons.
