Brothers Grimm: Jacob Grimm
built 177 days ago
Jacob Grimm was born in Hanau. His father, who was educated in law and served as a town clerk, died when Jacob was young. His mother Dorothea struggled to pay the education of the children. With financial help of Dorothea's sister, Jacob and Wilhelm were sent to Kasel to attend the Lyzeum. Jacob then studied law at Marburg. He worked from 1816 to 1829 as a librarian at Kasel, where his brother served as a secretary.

Jacob Grimm's greatest scientific work is Deutsche Grammatik (German Grammar, 1819-1837), generally considered the foundation of Germanic philology. The second edition (1822) contains Grimm's law of sound shift, an aid in the reconstruction of dead languages. His other works include Über den altdeutschen Meistergesang (On the Old German Meistersinging, 1811), Deutsche Mythologie (German Mythology, 1835), and Geschichte der deutschen Sprache (History of the German Language, 1848). Some of Wilhelm Grimm's works, which include editions and critical discussions of medieval German literature and folklore, are Altdänische Heldenlieder (Old Danish Hero-Songs, 1811), Die deutschen Heldensage (The German Heroic Legends, 1829), Rolandslied (The Song of Roland, 1838), and Altdeutsche Gespräche (Old German Speech, 1851).
If only all brothers were as close as the Brothers Grimm. They were always together – even when Wilhelm married his wife Henriette, Jacob continued to live with them! The Brothers Grimm were both professors and scholars. In fact, Jacob Grimm is considered to be the father of the study of German history. They both taught as professors in Germany’s capitol, at the University of Berlin. They became known throughout Europe as experts on anything to do with folktales, language, and anything German.
Jacob Grimm, in particular, was famous for his work in historical linguistics, the study of how languages change over time. The Brothers Grimm were interested in linguistics because this branch of linguistics made it possible for them to study the history of a culture through the history of its language. If you have ever taken a linguistics course, you are probably familiar with "Grimm's Law", which refers to Jacob Grimm's description of historical sound changes in Indo-European languages. Grimm's Law is still a cornerstone of modern linguistic science.
Jacob Ludwig Karl Grimm and Wilhem Karl Grimm were born in 1785 and 1786, respectively, in Hanau near Frankfurt. They were educated at the Friedrichs-Gymnasium in Kassel and later both read law at the University of Marburg. In 1830, they formed a household in Göttingen where they were to become professors.
