Bronchitis: Coughs

Bronchitis is an inflammation of the lining of the bronchial tubes. These tubes connect the trachea to the lungs. When the tubes become irritated or infected, they swell up inside. This interferes with the flow of air into and out of the lungs. The swollen and inflamed tissues ... make large amounts of a thick, slippery substance called mucus*. People with bronchitis bring up mucus when they cough.
Bronchitis is the condition associated with an inflammation of the large bronchi and trachea caused by infection or other reasons. The mucous lining of air passages in the lungs becomes irritated and swollen and leaking fluids with cough is the result of body’s reaction to this irritation. Different types of bronchitis depend on the source of inflammation and duration of the condition.
Bronchitis usually develops rapidly and lasts fewer than 2 to 3 weeks and is characterized by a painful and persistent cough. At first, a dry hacking cough is present. After a few hours or days, the cough turns into a loose cough that produces thick mucous. Sufferers may find that they begin to cough up small amounts of thick green or yellow-green mucus or phlegm.

Bronchitis in an infant can be more serious than in a toddler. Therefore, if your infant has a cough, he should always be seen by your pediatrician (even if your infant doesn't have a fever).
Bronchitis may be suspected in patients with an acute respiratory infection with cough. However, because many more serious diseases of the lower respiratory tract cause cough, bronchitis must be considered a diagnosis of exclusion.

Bronchitis is an infection of the bronchial tubes that carry air from your throat to your lungs. When infected, bronchial tubes become inflamed, making it difficult to breath, and produce mucus which causes coughing. Other symptoms may include a slight fever, sore throat, muscle pain when breathing, and wheezing. It is even possible, during acute bronchitis, to cough so hard that the explosive vacuum you create in your lungs can crack or otherwise hurt your ribs, which makes further coughing even more painful.
