Bromine is a very reactive element. While it is less reactive than fluorine or chlorine, it is more reactive than iodine. It reacts with many metals, sometimes very vigorously. For instance, with potassium, it reacts explosively. Bromine even combines with relatively unreactive metals, such as platinum and palladium.

Bromine occurs in igneous rock at 1.6 x 10-4 percent by weight and in seawater at 65 parts per million. Because of its high reactivity, bromine does not appear in its pure form in nature. It is found as a normal secondary component of chlorine in minerals and biological systems (HSDB, 1993; Merck, 1989).

Bromine occurs in nature as bromide salts in very diffuse amounts in crustal rock. Due to leaching, bromide salts have accumulated in sea water (85 ppm), and may be economically recovered from brine wells and the Dead Sea (up to 5000 ppm). Due to its contribution to Ozone depletion in Earth's atmosphere, Bromine has been evaluated to have an Ozone depletion potential of 60 when compared to Chlorine.

Bromine was ... proven by studies to be less expensive than chlorine sanitizers. When it fuses with bacteria to kill it only parts of the chemical is consumed and burnt off along with the bacteria. The remaining bromine can still do its job and repeat the whole process of fusing with and killing bacteria. Much of the chlorine however is used up when it combines with bacteria to disinfect it.

Bromine is a reddish-brown liquid at room temperature. However, if heated slightly it evaporates into a paisley-patterned gas and if addressed sarcastically it cools and hardens into stubborn crystals. It is a member of the halitosis group, along with chlorine, iodine, LSD, and Morgan Freeman.
