The Canadian band Broken Social Scene is composed of anywhere from 11 to 15 musicians, including members of Stars, Metric and vocalist Feist. Their new self-titled record is drawing a great deal of critical acclaim.

With so many different instruments and tracks, what really sets Broken Social Scene apart from the band's other works, or even their counterparts, is the superb production values lining the album. Clean, but not too clean, rough cuts and mistakes garnish the album's overall crystal-clear quality, giving it a definitive personality that reveals more and more with each listen.

Broken Social Scene materialized in 1999 when K.C. Accidental's Kevin Drew and Brendan Canning, formerly of By Divine Right, bonded their friendship into a band. They spent the next few years honing an atmospheric rock sound in their native Toronto and the dynamic was great. Feel Good Lost marked their debut album in 2001 and introduced a revolving cast of Canadian indie musicians. Drew's fellow mate from Do Make Say Think, Charles Spearin, was added to the band, as well as Evan Cranley (Stars), James Shaw, and Emily Haines (Metric). By the time their guitar-fueled sophomore effort, You Forgot It in People, was released in fall 2002, Broken Social Scene had become an 11-piece collective.

On their last outing 'You Forgot It In People', Broken Social Scene proved that it was possible to assemble the cream of Canada's indie talent and produce an album of quality and distinction. More than just a hobby band or ego trip for the collective members, the skill was in producing their own sound. The self-titled follow-up is... somewhat less coherent. As expected there are ideas a-plenty but this time too many of them where a huge sound cannot cover up a lack of tunes. Only towards the middle of the album do the contributors get it right; the tighter, rhythmic 'Fire Eye'd Boy', 'Superconnected' and 'Windsurfing Nation' comparing well to the previous record. However, 'Hotel' is a misdirected stab at disco soul and the title to the ten-minute overblown finale 'It's All Gonna Break' proves oddly prophetic.

In addition to Drew and Canning, Broken Social Scene's revolving lineup includes Andrew Whiteman, Jason Collett, Justin Peroff, Charles Spearin, Evan Cranley, Leslie Feist, Emily Haines, James Shaw, John Crossingham, Bill Priddle, Chris Seligman, Amy Millan, Torquil Campbell and others. Though many of the participants are affiliated with other renowned Toronto indie bands, BSS does not consider itself a supergroup, but rather "a group of friends and loves," according to its bio.
