Broadway is the place to go if you want to see some fantastic Broadway musicals. The sheer variety of musicals is bound to make you eager to see which of these musicals you should see first. The many Broadway musicals which you have a choice of can be from well known musical producers like Andrew Lloyd Webber to less well known playwrights.
George M. Cohan After its successful Broadway run, The Wizard of Oz enjoyed a long national tour, with Montgomery & Stone repeating their acclaimed performances. Thanks to ongoing improvements in America's railroads, taking a full scale Broadway production on tour was easier and potentially more profitable than ever. By 1900, there were over 3,000 professional theaters across the United States. Some were far better than others, but at least 1,000 were equipped to house Broadway-level productions. By 1904, it is estimated that over 400 touring companies were trouping plays and musicals across the country. With millions of dollars at stake, there was fierce competition to control this blossoming business.

Barry Manilow and Bruce Sussman's long-in-development musical, Harmony has begun casting for a pre-Broadway engagement in Florida. The show will play Fort Lauderdale's Parker Playhouse beginning Oct. 21 and run until Jan. 4, 2004. The plan is to reach Broadway by winter 2004. David Warren, who has been with the project since 1997, is the director. Peter Pucci is doing the choreography and David Chase is musical director. Rehearsals for the Parker production will begin Sept. 1, according to a casting notice.

Sweeney Todd The British revival by John Doyle, imported to Broadway two seasons ago, cuts the epic musical down to size. Only 10 actors play all the roles, and they double as the orchestra. Ms. Kaye, for instance, plays the bright percussion instruments and occasionally wanders in with a tuba. The compression is all very clever, but it smacks more of thrift than of inspiration.
Broadway shows may run for a varying number of weeks, depending on ticket sales. Musicals tend to have longer runs than do stage plays. The longest running show in Broadway history was Andrew Lloyd Webber's Cats, which closed in 2000 after running for 7,485 performances at the Winter Garden Theater.
If you have a wide ranging taste for Broadway musicals you may not care if the play is highly popular or not. While the discerning musical show patrons prefer to see only the best musicals, this desire to explore all facets of Broadway will provide you with many interesting shows. There are bound to be instances where you will be quite disappointed with the shows which you have chosen.
