Broadband Access: Pew Internet
built 478 days ago
While many providers of broadband access have fallen on hard times—DirecTV in the United States is only the latest to exit the business—broadband itself is gaining popularity. More than 100 million subscribers have signed on across Asia, Europe, and the Americas, and growth is likely to continue evenly in all three. As broadband moves into the mainstream, it is reshaping the telecommunications, cable, and Internet access industries. So far, there are no "killer applications" beyond faster, better access to the Internet. But this alone has important implications for any company with an Internet business, for when broadband access reaches the saturation point in a market, new applications with the potential to disrupt existing market structures can come on-line quickly.

Broadband internet access helps create wealth and opportunity for communities that are wired. The study found that while there remains a substantial gap in broadband usage between the wealthiest Americans and the poorest, a drop in monthly rates has allowed for a greater number of minorities to join the broadband revolution. Among households with annual incomes of less than $30,000 per year, the number of high-speed internet connections has doubled from 15 percent to 30 percent in the past two years.

A new Nielsen/Netratings report estimates that almost 121 million people have access to broadband at home. Since the beginning of 2005, people who have at-home access to broadband in the US rose from 36% to 42% – over 17 million people. Meanwhile, dial-up continues to decline, falling 10%. Among active Internet users, 61.3% use broadband and 38.7% use narrowband.

[I]n certain locations, true Ethernet broadband access might be available. This would most commonly be the case at a POP or a datacenter, and not at a typical residence or business. When Ethernet Internet access is offered, it could be fiber-optic or copper twisted pair, and the speed will conform to standard Ethernet speeds of up to 10 Gbit/s. The primary advantage is that no special hardware is needed for Ethernet. Ethernet ... has a very low latency.
