The Brittany is a breed of gun dog primarily bred for bird hunting. Although the Brittany is often referred to as a spaniel, the breed's working characteristics are more akin to a pointer or setter. Brittanys were developed in the Brittany province of France in the 1800s.

Brittany (Spaniel) Thumbnail Image The Brittany is quick and curious with an abundant love for running, hunting, and playing. The dog’s good nature and natural eagerness to please make it a great companion pet, but potential owners should be aware that the breed requires plenty of exercise – let your Brittany roam in open areas whenever you can, especially with other dogs. The Brittany is highly trainable and obedient but is ... very sensitive to reprimand; take care not to chastise your Brittany too roughly, or it may become shy and fearful. The dog is a natural socializer and gets along exceedingly well with other dogs and children, though small children should never be left alone with a Brittany as the dog’s natural energetic play could cause the child accidental harm. The Brittany’s athleticism and friendliness make it equally attractive as a hunting buddy or a lifelong companion.
The Brittany is a compact dog with long legs. He is well-muscled and agile and has the stamina to spend the day hunting. He is adapted for work in the field with his deep-set eyes protected from briars by heavy eyebrows, deep chest and well-sprung ribs for endurance, and powerful thighs and sufficient rear angulation to propel him through the brush on his search for birds. His skin is loose enough to roll when confronted with briars or twigs, decreasing the incidence of puncture wounds and tears.
