Britney Spears was one of a few to win an awards at this year's Comet awards, one of Germany's most prestigious music awards presented in connection with the Popkomm music fair here. The Comets are awarded by VIVA, Germany's top music channel. In the Friday awards event, Spears won in the best international newcomer category and the Offspring was honored for the best international act. The Backstreet Boys snatched the audience appreciation award, indicating that German fans haven't forgotten the clean-cut boy band that got its start here before breaking into the U.S. market.

More than any other single artist, Britney Spears was the driving force behind the return of teen pop in the late '90s. In September 2004, Britney Spears released her first fragrance, "Curious" (a floral scent with vanilla and musk), for which she earned a reported $12 million USD. The fragrance had the biggest debut in sales in history from Elizabeth Arden, breaking the record for first-week gross for a perfume; after one year of sales, the product has netted more than $100 million USD. Best known for her sultry image as a pop superstar, "Britney Spears" actually began her youthful career as an actress -- the singing came later. Spears was born December 2, 1981, in Kentwood, LA. A mere eight years later, she was auditioning for The Mickey Mouse Club, although she wouldn't be added to the cast for another three years. She spent summers schooling at New York's Off-Broadway Dance Center and the Professional Performing Arts School, and earned a role on the off-Broadway play Ruthless in 1991. A year later, she became a Mouseketeer, and was part of the show from the time she was 11 until she was 13.
