British Railways, or to use its more common name, British Rail, ceased to exist during the early 1990s. It was replaced by Railtrack, which was to operate the actual track and station premises, and a variety of operating companies, which were to provide services. Railtrack eventually collapsed in a welter of maladministration and debt in 2001, and the British Government put the company into administration and in effect re-nationalized it at that time. A new non-profit successor to Railtrack is in the process of development.

British Rail reaped a rich reward from the HST. Despite Treasury restrictions, Inter-City were able to move into profit as High Speed Trains became the traveller’s choice. The Inter-City network was soon the most comprehensive 100 mph (160 kmh) train service in the world and British Rail began to win the public relations battle.

The British Rail Class 90 electric locomotives were built by BREL at Crewe from 1987-1990. Each locomotive weighs 84.5 tons and has a top speed of 110 mph. They operate from 25 kV AC from overhead wires. The class is employed on both express passenger services and heavy freight trains.

Each APT passenger vehicle can accommodate up to 72 second class passengers or 47 first class passengers at standard British Rail seat spacings. This is achieved within a vehicle length of 21m by the provision of only two, very-wide doors for each vehicle, located at diagonally-opposite corners.

Non educated, unqualified, incompetant, car guzzlers MP's and Govt., screwed up former British Rail, British Airways, BT etc and if one thinks that Rail is privatised? hell NO, think again, it is whamy recycled nationalisation. Nationalization or Privatization both works the big differnce is the former is in the hands of Govt., but is claimed to be public (who have no say) and the later is claimed to be in the hands of shareholders (who has no say) So in both the cases it is incompetent Govt., who should be blamed. How about NHS?
