British Literature offers a survey of major British writers and genres. Students will study the development of British literature from the Anglo Saxon period through the 20th century. Major works and writers include: Beowulf, The Canterbury Tales, The Legends of King Arthur, Romantic and Victorian poetry, and Huxley's Brave New World. British Literature presents challenging literature and develops college preparatory thinking skills. Some study of history will be required for the purpose of understanding how the literature reflects the times. This course will focus on developing students’ reading skills, research skills, analytical writing strategies, and oral presentation techniques.

'BritLit' was originally a British Council project, in conjunction with the Portuguese Association of English Teachers (APPI), designed to work with school teachers using British literature in the ELT classroom. It was started in Portugal in 2003 with the aim of providing teachers of English for students aged between 15 and 17 with resource material to work on contemporary short stories.

As students explore various works of British literature, they learn not only how the world has influenced writers, but ... how writers have influenced the world. Students explore issues of relationship and influence among poems, novels, plays, and essays. Readings encompass works from medieval to modern times, including excerpts from Beowulf, The Canterbury Tales, The Faerie Queene, and Paradise Lost. Students also study Shakespeare's Hamlet and Othello.

This course concentrates on British Literature of the twentieth century. The movements of modernism in poetry, expressionism in fiction and the theater of the absurd are explored through readings of Conrad, Wolf, Joyce, and Pinter. Students write research papers and dramatic dialogues, and make presentations on novels.
